Cook Agencies in Hyderabad: How They Actually Work
Most people find a cook one of two ways in Hyderabad: through their building, or through a placement agency. The first is free and has no guarantees. The second costs about a month's salary and the guarantee is narrower than people assume.
Here is what you are actually buying.
The fee
Typically half to one full month's salary, paid once, on placement. On a ₹6,000 cook that is ₹3,000–6,000.
Some agencies quote a lower fee with a shorter guarantee, some higher with longer. Ask for both numbers together — a fee without a guarantee period is not a quote.
The replacement guarantee
Usually 30 to 90 days. If the cook leaves or does not work out inside that window, they place another at no additional fee.
What it typically covers: she quits, she stops turning up, or she is clearly unsuitable.
What it typically does not cover: you change your mind about the arrangement, your requirements change, or the problem is timing you agreed to and now regret. Read the terms — this is the part people assume rather than check.
What they actually do for you
Speed. This is the real product. An agency can put three candidates in front of you this week; your building's WhatsApp group might take a fortnight.
Some verification. Reputable ones hold ID and often police verification. Ask to see it rather than assuming — the answer tells you which kind of agency you are dealing with.
A fallback. The guarantee has real value in areas where hiring is slow.
What they do not do
They do not manage the relationship, set the terms, or make the timing conversation for you. They do not guarantee fit. And they have no particular incentive for the placement to last beyond the guarantee window, which is worth remembering.
The strongest signal of a decent agency is how they answer "have you done police verification, and can I see it?" A good one produces it immediately. Evasiveness is information, and it is the cheapest test available.
When the building beats the agency
When you are not in a hurry. Referral chains inside a complex produce better matches, because the reference is real and specific rather than a CV.
When supply is good. In the older settled pockets — Kondapur, Kothaguda, Manikonda, the old-city side — there are enough cooks nearby that an agency adds cost without adding much reach.
When you want someone already cleared at your gate. In a gated complex, a cook already registered is faster to onboard and easier to check.
When the agency wins
New pockets with thin supply. Kokapet, Raidurg, Tellapur — where almost every cook is commuting in and there is no local network to ask.
When you have just moved and know literally nobody.
When you need it solved this week.
Two things to check before paying
- Ask their radius. Agencies covering Gachibowli will usually serve Gopanpally without a premium; some quote it as an outer area anyway. Ask explicitly.
- Get the fee, the guarantee period and what voids it, in writing. A WhatsApp message is fine.
The alternative nobody mentions
For a single meal for one or two people, neither route is good value — you are paying a finder's fee and a salary to solve one lunch. The honest comparison there is a tiffin or a subscription, and a tiffin is usually cheaper than both.
Fresh, chef-cooked lunches delivered daily across Hyderabad — from ₹90 a meal, no delivery fees.
Compare the alternativesShort version
You are paying for speed and a narrow guarantee. Worth it in the new western pockets or when you have just arrived; usually not worth it in the settled areas, where your building will do better for free.
