Setting Up a Home in Gachibowli: What You Actually Need
Setting up a first flat generates an enormous amount of advice, most of it a shopping list. The useful version is shorter and ordered by what blocks what.
This assumes an unfurnished or semi-furnished 1–2BHK in Gachibowli or nearby.
Week one: the things that block other things
Gas connection. Longest lead time of anything. Start it the day you get the keys, before you buy a single utensil, because everything kitchen-related waits on it.
Water storage and purifier. Find out the building's supply schedule first — it varies by tower, let alone by area — and size storage accordingly.
Internet. Book early; the good providers have waiting lists in the newer buildings.
Society registration. Gated complexes will not let deliveries or help up until you are registered, which is a surprisingly effective way to spend a week eating out.
What to buy immediately
- A mattress. Everything else can wait a week; this cannot.
- An induction plate, even if gas is coming. Cheap, immediate, useful forever.
- A kettle.
- Curtains, unless you enjoy being woken at 5:45.
- One good knife and one pan. Not a set — a set is how you own eleven things you never use.
What can wait
A dining table, a full crockery set, a washing machine if your building has laundry nearby, and every piece of decor. You do not yet know how you use the flat.
What to skip
A car, at first — see getting around the corridor. A full grocery shop before the kitchen works. And a two-year lease signed in week one, before you understand the difference between this road and the one behind it.
The most useful thing you will acquire in your first month is not an object. It is the building WhatsApp group — where cooks, plumbers, electricians and the shop that actually delivers all get recommended by people who have tested them.
The local things that are hard to find online
Domestic help. Gachibowli has high demand and tight supply — a good part-time cook is usually spoken for within a day of becoming available. The building group beats every portal, and if you have just moved and know nobody, the listing sites are the way in. We have written up what a cook costs in Gachibowli and where to look.
A vegetable vendor you trust. Ask a neighbour. This is not solvable online.
Which pharmacy delivers at 11 PM. Also the group.
The food gap
There is a specific window — usually week one to week three — where the kitchen does not fully work, you have no cook, and you are eating from apps three times a day. It is the single largest unplanned expense of moving, and it is entirely predictable.
The fix is not to solve all three meals. It is to fix lunch, which is the meal you eat most predictably and the one where a delivery app is worst value, and let breakfast and dinner be improvised until the kitchen is real.
Fresh, chef-cooked lunches delivered daily across Hyderabad — from ₹90 a meal, no delivery fees.
Sort lunch from day oneShort version
Gas connection and society registration on day one, mattress and induction plate immediately, everything else when you know how you actually live in the flat. And find the WhatsApp group — it is worth more than any shopping list.
